    A Study on Virtual Reality Storytelling by Story Authoring Tool Algorithm

    The objective of this study was to examine the storytelling principles of virtual reality contents, which are recently grabbing much attention, and the patterns of their generation rules and, based on the results, to analyze the elements and structure of a storytelling method suitable for virtual reality contents. In virtual reality environment, a story is usually being generated between choices made by a user who behaves autonomously under simulated environmental factors and the environmental constraints. This corresponds to a mutually complementary role of representation and simulation, which has been hotly discussed in the field of interactive storytelling. This study was conducted based on the assumption that such a mutually complementary realization is ideal for virtual reality storytelling. A simulation-based story authoring tool is a good example that shows this mutual complementation, in that it develops a story through various algorithms which involves the interaction of agents which occur within the strata of a virtual environment. Therefore, it can be a methodology for virtual reality storytelling. The structures and elements of narratives used in virtual reality storytelling which achieve balance of representation and simulation are much similar to an algorithm strategy of a simulation-based story authoring tool. The virtual reality contents released up to now can be classified into four categories based on the two axes of representation and simulation. The study focused on contents which are layered in higher strata of both representation and simulation. In the perspective of representation strata, these contents are actively using such elements as goal, event, action, perception, internal element, outcome, and setting element, which are constituents of ‘Fabula model’, to generate time relations and cause-effect relations. And in the perspective of simulation strata, the use of the ‘Late commitment’ strategy allowed users to understand the meanings of their actions taken during the process of experimenting with various dynamic principles within the environment

    CCN1 interlinks integrin and hippo pathway to autoregulate tip cell activity

    CCN1 (CYR61) stimulates active angiogenesis in various tumours, although the mechanism is largely unknown. Here, we report that CCN1 is a key regulator of endothelial tip cell activity in angiogenesis. Microvessel networks and directional vascular cell migration patterns were deformed in ccn1-knockdown zebrafish embryos. CCN1 activated VEGFR2 and downstream MAPK/PI3K signalling pathways, YAP/TAZ, as well as Rho effector mDia1 to enhance tip cell activity and CCN1 itself. VEGFR2 interacted with integrin αvβ3 through CCN1. Integrin αvβ3 inhibitor repressed tip cell number and sprouting in postnatal retinas from endothelial cell-specific Ccn1 transgenic mice, and allograft tumours in Ccn1 transgenic mice showed hyperactive vascular sprouting. Cancer patients with high CCN1 expression have poor survival outcomes and positive correlation with ITGAV and ITGB3 and high YAP/WWTR1. Thus, our data underscore the positive feedback regulation of tip cells by CCN1 through integrin αvβ3/VEGFR2 and increased YAP/TAZ activity, suggesting a promising therapeutic intervention for pathological angiogenesis. © 2019, Park et al.1

    A Case of Endoscopically Treated Laryngopharyngitis Resulting from Clinostomum complanatum Infection

    A 46-year-old woman visited our hospital presenting throat pain and globus sensation. The symptoms occurred seven days after eating raw perch and mullet. An endoscopy under sedation showed a fluke―with an approximate length of 4.8 mm and width of 1.5 mm―on the left aryepiglottic fold, with active motility on the mucosa. It was extracted from the larynx using biopsy forceps and was identified as Clinostomum complanatum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of human infection with Clinostomum complanatum diagnosed and treated by an endoscopy in Korea. Endoscopy is a useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at risk for parasitic infections complaining of throat pain

    Abstract: In this paper, we have theoretically analyzed and designed a dielectric multi-layer sensor with a SPR (surface plasmon resonance) using analytical calculation and FDTD (finite difference time-domain) methods. The proposed structure is composed of periodic layer and thin metal film. It has many advantages. One of that is a high sensitivity of the SPR. Another is a high Q-factor of the characteristics in the PhC (photonic crystals) micro-cavity structure. The incident light has double resonance characteristics, because the filtered light by PhC structure, dielectric multi-layer, is met the thin metal film for SPR effect. We have also observed the change of resonance characteristics according to the variation of effective index on the metal film

    Healthy lifestyle factors, cardiovascular comorbidities, and the risk of sudden cardiac arrest: A case-control study in Korea

    © 2022 Elsevier B.V.Aims: We investigated the impact of healthy lifestyle factors and cardiovascular comorbidities for sudden cardiac arrest. Methods: A case-control study, including patients with sudden cardiac arrest aged 20–79 years and community-based 1:2 matched controls, was conducted from September 2017 to December 2020. All participants completed a structured questionnaire. Using multivariable logistic regression, we assessed cardiovascular comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and stroke) and healthy lifestyle factors (low red meat consumption, low fish consumption, high fruit consumption, high vegetable consumption, current non-smoking, regular exercise, and adequate sleep duration) as sudden cardiac arrest risk factors. Results: Among 3027 eligible cases, informed consent was obtained from 949 (31.3%) cases. A total of 1731 controls were enrolled. Cardiovascular comorbidities, except dyslipidaemia, were associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest, whereas all healthy lifestyle factors were associated with a decreased risk. Relative to patients in the 0–2 healthy lifestyle factors group, the adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for sudden cardiac arrest was 0.25 (0.16–0.40) in patients with 3 healthy lifestyle factors, 0.08 (0.05–0.13) in patients with 4 healthy lifestyle factors, and 0.04 (0.03–0.06) in patients with over 5 healthy lifestyle factors. When the number of healthy lifestyle factors was analysed as a continuous variable, each additional factor was associated with a significant decrease in the likelihood of sudden cardiac arrest (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.41 [0.36–0.46]). Conclusion: The increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest by cardiovascular comorbidities could be significantly reduced with healthy lifestyle factors.N

    Clinical Factors Associated with Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease in Patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: Data from the Korean Cardiac Arrest Research Consortium (KoCARC) Registry

    Background: Although coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major cause of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), there has been no convinced data on the necessity of routine invasive coronary angiography (ICA) in OHCA. We investigated clinical factors associated with obstructive CAD in OHCA. Methods: Data from 516 OHCA patients (mean age 58 years, 83% men) who underwent ICA after resuscitation was obtained from a nation-wide OHCA registry. Obstructive CAD was defined as the lesions with diameter stenosis >= 50% on ICA. Independent clinical predictors for obstructive CAD were evaluated using multiple logistic regression analysis, and their prediction performance was compared using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve with 10,000 repeated random permutations. Results: Among study patients, 254 (49%) had obstructive CAD. Those with obstructive CAD were older (61 vs. 55 years, P < 0.001) and had higher prevalence of hypertension (54% vs. 36%, P < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (29% vs. 21%, P = 0.032), positive cardiac enzyme (84% vs. 74%, P = 0.010) and initial shockable rhythm (70% vs. 61%, P = 0.033). In multiple logistic regression analysis, old age (>= 60 years) (odds ratio [On 2.01; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36-3.00; P = 0.001), hypertension (OR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.18-2.57; P = 0.005), positive cardiac enzyme (OR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.09-2.70; P = 0.019), and initial shockable rhythm (OR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.16-2.54; P = 0.007) were associated with obstructive CAD. Prediction ability for obstructive CAD increased proportionally when these 4 factors were sequentially combined (P < 0.001). Conclusion: In patients with OHCA, those with old age, hypertension, positive cardiac enzyme and initial shockable rhythm were associated with obstructive CAD. Early ICA should be considered in these patients.Y
